Sarajevo: The Remains

The city of Sarajevo , a consistent view of the surrounding mountains and a mix of cultures , Sarajevo , holds a legacy that will not let go. Every building, every home remains riddled by bullet holes from the war that ravaged the country for five years. But the worst remains of the war are that of landmines. It is estimated that there are one million mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina in over 30.000 mined areas, where almost 50-60% of those have been recorded. Numbers are much less important, however, than impact. People cannot return home due to the fear of mines or whenever they risk doing it, they learn eventually to live with them. Most of the accidents of civilians occurred in and around their houses. In a country that has so much rebuilding to do, it is unfair and cruel that there should be landmines hindering development at every turn. And they are at every turn…
