Bio

I am a documentary photographer whose work centres on long-term projects that confront human rights. Most recently, my work has focused on human trafficking for sexual exploitation and immigration.

I was one of the few women photographers in Iraq in 1998 -1999. I documented the country under embargo and depleted uranium, mainly in Baghdad and Basra, and my work was shown at Visa Pour L'image in Perpignan in 2001 and at the Project Symposium in Santa Fe. For the same documentary, “Iraq After The Storm,” I received "The Best of Photojournalism in the year 2000" from PDN Competitions, 2001 and The Director's Award of the Project Competition 2000, Santa Fe School of Visual Arts.

My most recent work on refugees in Greece has just been acquired for the collection of Joaquin Paiva, a Brazilian collector. In 2019, my book on human trafficking for sexual exploitation, “Trade,” was shortlisted at the Athens Photo Festival and at the Kassel photo book festival. In 2016, a selection from the same body of work was exhibited as a part of “Break the Chain,” an exhibition that was part of a festival organised to oppose human trafficking. My work on the theme of human trafficking has received the 2nd best portfolio in review at the Bratislava Photo Festival, 2015. My photo essay, "Brothels in Athens: The Legal Background For Trafficking" has been shown several times in Athens since 2011. It then became an itinerant exhibition and was shown around Greece in 2012 by the Secretariat of Gender Equality. In 2007 “Human Trafficking” was exhibited at The Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg, which also went on to become an itinerant exhibition around the world.

As an independent photographer my work has been published in The New York Times; NZZ Newspaper (Switzerland); Epsilon Magazine, GEO (Greece); Elle (Italy). As well as in some NGO campaigns against human trafficking, such as Terre Des Hommes; International Organisation for Migration; The United Nations Children's Fund, among others.

I was born in Sao Paulo. I studied at The Pan Americana School of Arts, in Sao Paulo. In 1995 I moved to New York City as a full time student at ICP. I also attended Film and International Affairs at NYU. I worked as a photo editor at Redux - formerly Saba Press; I assisted Brian Young in Phototechnica Black & White custom Lab, printing and retouching for exhibitions, photography collections and book publications, including "Inferno" by James Nachtwey, whom I assisted for almost a year until I moved to Greece where I have been based since 2001.
