Elephants, Kenya, 1998

This series of images were taken between 1995 and 1998 in various locations around the world. Using the tonality of black and white film, the play of light in the environment and the untethered movement of my subjects—animals—I aimed to portray their freedom, their liberty, rather that to ‘capture’ them as traditional nature photography tends to do.

The images also connect with my documentary work as a counterpoint to the enslavement of many of my human subjects. Further, they evoke the pure fragility of the freedom to simply be, for all of us.
